Know Your Why

The idea of wanting/needing to know your ‘Why’ has been around since Aristotle times (see articles below). Aristotle argued that all things have a purpose or goal, and the purpose is always to attain some level of good. Note that this is in relation to ‘all things’, not necessarily to personal development and ourselves only.

The need to know your Why was popularised by Simon Sinek at a TED Talk in 2014, titled ‘Start with Why‘. This one talk is now used by many life coaches and referenced in many articles, when discussing the need for a person to know what drives them in life.

According to Simon Sinek your why is…

“The compelling higher purpose that inspires us and acts as the source of all we do.”

Some of the key benefits of knowing your Why are:-

  • Your wellbeing, in conjunction with your personal Values.
  • Having a purpose that drives you on, unapologetic in what and why you do what you do.
  • It helps you bounce out of bed every morning 😉
  • Confidence
  • Self Awareness
  • Knowing what goals and actions to take 

The articles below will take you through various steps to help you find your Why, but we have listed what we think are the core steps finding your Why:-

1 – Watch the TED talk by Simon Sinek. 18 minutes of your time well spent.

2 – Draw Simons Golden Circle on a piece of paper, and list all your important Life Areas.

3 – For every Life Area you have, write your How and What. Delve into your emotions about why you do what you do

4 – Consider your WHY for each Life Area – it may take some time – days, weeks!

5 – Write a Why statement for each Life Area, using the following sentence structure:-

‘To {my contribution to this Life Area} so that {my impact in this Life Area}’
