Fake it

Fake it ’till you make it

Possibly the most well know of all personal frameworks . . . Fake It Till You Make It

Of all the personal frameworks, this is possibly the most well known, and most quoted in recent years.

As Wikipedia puts it: by imitating confidence, competence, and an optimistic mindset, a person can realize those qualities in their real life and achieve the results they seek.

That is the modern day definition of it, yet the idea has been around for a while now: from Don Quixote (1605/15): “If you want to be a knight, act like a knight“. Philosopher William James also knew this back in 1884, in saying, “If you want a quality, act as if you already have it.”.

Now, actually using this approach, the belief in doing it, and the results have the potential to be rather, ummm, sinister, shall we say. And if not sinister, how about misleading? Or if that’s still a wee bit too strong for your liking, let’s go with pretend shall we?

Like words and weapons, it’s how you use it that counts.

Using ‘fake it till you make it’ to build you online business empire is indeed more ‘n more possible these days. Why? ‘cos of the internet. The internet has enabled a way for us to make a business persona that implies our business is bigger than it actually is. A good professional front facing website – tic. Professional emails – tic. Professional answering service – tic. On the surface, smooth, like a duck on water. Behind the scenes, like a duck, frantically paddling to keep moving.

Aren’t we ALL pretending just a little bit?

Who am I (or is it ‘we’, with my big personal development empire) to say this is a right or wrong approach?

Only you can make that decision.

We know in ourselves, instinctively, if we are capable of taking on this approach and running with it.

Things to consider  when using ‘fake it ’till you make it’:-

  • For some, there is no option. In a dog-eat-dog world, this way can be the only way.
  • When our personal security & safety is at risk, this approach can (and has) saved peoples lives.
  • Know that at some point you will probably be found out. The issue is, what you did along the way to ‘making it’. Break the law?  Tell a few white lies?

A final few words on this:

 . . . don’t be fake to yourself.

. . . know it’s an act that you are putting on.

. . . don’t use it to cause harm to others.
